Carl Maria von Weber
(1786-1826)
Composer, pianist, guitarist and conductor Carl Maria von Weber perhaps was unfortunate in being a contemporary of Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn and Berlioz. Because of this he is sometimes remembered more for the effect he had on Richard Wagner than for his own compositions. In fact, Weber was an extremely gifted man and well-regarded in his own lifetime, producing an impressive catalogue of work in a variety of genres.
Along with Saint-Saens, Weber may be the most unjustly neglected of 19th-century song composers. In the purely instrumental field, his pieces prominently featuring the clarinet have an enduring appeal. Of his operas, at least Der Freischutz and Oberon continue in the repertoire; and his songs (with both piano and guitar) offer much for performers and audiences to enjoy.

I want to see Weber featuring in recital programmes in 2026. While there is little doubt that his wonderful clarinet concertos and chamber music will get a good airing, along with one or two operas and possibly his fluent and enlivening piano music, there needs to be a place for at least the best of his 100-odd songs.
Using the bicentenary of Weber’s death to gain him more public attention, I shall be delighted to hear from any organisation or individual who has his music in mind for performance, especially in 2026.
